What It Is

A Short Look at Reading Classes for Kids

Reading classes for kids in Ambon are guided lessons that take a child from meeting letter sounds for the very first time to reading full passages on their own. A Lilo tutor teaches through seven measured levels, using our own curriculum of leveled modules, at home, in a small group, or online.

Who Is This For

Who These Classes Are For

Every child arrives at reading from a different starting point. We meet your child at theirs, whether that is zero letters or halting sentences, and build steadily from there.

Little Explorers, Ages 3 to 4

Your child is at the pre-reading stage and meets sounds through play. Songs, sound cards, and short joyful sessions plant the first seeds long before formal reading begins.

Kindergarten Kids, Ages 4 to 6

Your child is getting ready for primary school. This is the heart of the journey: learning letter sounds, blending them into syllables, and reading their very first words with pride.

Early Primary, Ages 6 to 8

Your child can read a little and now needs strength. We work on tricky letter combinations, smooth sentences, and understanding what a passage actually says.

Catching Up Without Shame

Your school-age child is still finding reading hard. We quietly find the exact stage where things got stuck and rebuild from there, so confidence returns along with skill.

Method

How Your Child Learns to Read

Our method rests on a simple idea: sounds come before names, mastery comes before moving up, and small steady portions beat long tiring drills.

  1. Find the right starting point

Every child begins with a placement assessment. We listen to how your child handles letters, sounds, and words, then place them at the level where learning feels achievable.

  2. Learn what letters say

Your child learns the sound each letter makes, like /m/ and /a/, through songs and sound cards. Knowing the sounds is the key that unlocks everything after.

  3. Blend sounds into syllables and words

Sounds flow straight into syllables and syllables into words. We skip letter-name spelling drills entirely, so reading feels like one smooth motion from the start.

  4. Grow into sentences and stories

At the upper levels your child reads whole sentences with expression, then short passages with real understanding. Steady practice in the spirit of Kumon keeps progress calm and constant.

Our Craft

The Reading Craft Behind Every Session

These are the signatures our tutors carry into every home and every online room in Ambon, refined across our own library of 122 leveled modules.

Phonics Through Letter Sounds

Your child learns that m says /m/ before learning its name. Sounds are the working parts of reading, and starting there makes blending feel natural instead of puzzling.

Blending Whole Syllables

Sounds glide directly into syllables, so your child reads ma as one piece. This keeps reading smooth and spares them the slow habit of naming letters one by one.

Texts Your Child Can Read Alone

Our leveled readers contain only patterns your child has already learned. Every page is a page they can genuinely finish, which is how independent readers are made.

Extra Care at Letter Combinations

Patterns like ng, ny, and tr trip up more children than any other stage. We slow down here on purpose, with extra practice and patience until they feel easy.

Worth Knowing

Common Reading Mistakes We Help You Avoid

Most reading struggles come from a handful of well-meaning habits. Knowing them early saves your child months of frustration and keeps the joy in learning.

Drilling letter names and spelling aloud

Why it happensA child who chants b, u, bu is naming letters instead of hearing sounds, and that habit stalls blending for a long time.

How Lilo helpsTeach the sound each letter makes and blend sounds directly into whole syllables, the way every Lilo lesson does from Level 0.

Memorizing letter shapes without their sounds

Why it happensRecognizing the shape of A is a picture skill. Reading only starts when the child knows what that shape says out loud.

How Lilo helpsPair every letter with its sound from the first meeting, using sound cards and songs until the connection is automatic.

Jumping straight to hard books

Why it happensA book full of unlearned patterns teaches a child that reading equals failing, and confidence drains fast.

How Lilo helpsUse leveled readers that contain only patterns already mastered, so every book your child opens is a book they can finish.

Rushing past letter combinations

Why it happensPatterns like ng, ny, and tr are the most common sticking point in the whole journey, and skimming them leaves gaps that surface later.

How Lilo helpsSlow down at this stage on purpose. In our curriculum, Level 4 receives extra care, extra practice, and extra patience.

FAQ

Questions Parents Ask Us

Can my child join without knowing any letters?
Yes, and this is exactly what Level 0 is for. Your child begins with the five vowel sounds and first consonants through songs and sound cards, at their own pace. Many of our happiest graduations started with a child who knew zero letters on day one.
What age should my child start?
We welcome children aged 3 to 10, and the core reading journey runs from about 4 to 8. Ages 3 to 4 meet sounds through play, while older children who read haltingly start from wherever the placement assessment shows they truly are.
Do you teach at home or online in Ambon?
Both. A tutor can come to your home for private 1-on-1 sessions of 60 minutes, in areas such as Sirimau, Nusaniwe, Teluk Ambon Baguala, and Kudamati. There are also small group classes, and private online sessions of 60 minutes that stay fully interactive.
Why do you start with letter sounds?
Because sounds are what a reader actually uses. When your child knows that m says /m/, the sounds blend straight into syllables and words. We skip letter-name spelling drills, since naming letters one by one slows blending down and makes reading feel like a chore.
Is this an English course?
Lilo Reading is a reading program. English serves as the language of instruction for families who want it, and lessons focus on letter sounds, blending, fluency, and comprehension. Bilingual instruction is available, so your child can also learn with Indonesian as the language of instruction.
How much do the classes cost?
The fee depends on the service you pick: private at home, small group, or private online. Send us a message on WhatsApp for a free consultation and we will explain the current options clearly, with a recommendation that fits your child and your schedule.
